Redefining contemporary banqueting with a fusion of Kolkata’s heritage and modern design.
Banquets play a key role in communities, especially within the South Asian diaspora, preserving traditions while bringing people together for important celebrations. In Salt Lake City, Nishtara redefines contemporary banqueting by blending Kolkata's rich heritage with modern design. Inspired by Kolkata’s European influence, temple architecture, and the Bengal School of Art, the design mixes Gothic and Romanesque styles with local craftsmanship. Cross-vaulted ceilings and detailed columns bring together the city’s historic roots and a modern feel.
The design prioritises functionality and guest experience, with a well-planned layout that includes a pre- function area, main banquet hall, bridal rooms with lockers and makeup facilities, green rooms, andaccessible toilets. The banquet hall, accommodating 100-200 people, offers a flexible layout for easy movement and adaptability to various events, ensuring privacy, convenience, and comfort.
Unlike typical banquet facilities with temporary setups, the design includes permanent infrastructure for operations. A metal grid system in the ceiling allows quick installation of lighting, décor, and other elements, eliminating the need for time-consuming setups. This ensures smooth event execution while maintaining the space’s aesthetic and adaptability for personalisation.
A standout feature is the bespoke chandeliers, inspired by the Bengal School of Art, which serve as striking focal points. The terrazzo flooring from Pidilite mirrors the cross-vaulted ceilings, while custom carpets by Obeetee reflect similar motifs. Together, these elements create a harmonious flow with earthy tones throughout the space.
The interiors feature a warm, earthy colour palette that balances the space's grand scale with a cosy, welcoming feel. Traditional craftsmanship meets modern technology, with CNC-machined precision and hand-finished details. Rubberwood boards shape the cross-vaulted ceilings and detailed columns, creating visual continuity and an understated yet grand character. The project blends tradition and technology, reinterpreting Kolkata’s architectural and cultural heritage in a modern context. With careful detailing and thoughtful planning, it creates a timeless space that connects the past to the present, offering a meaningful and enduring design.
