A jewellery flagship that transforms heritage into an immersive, contemporary narrative of Indian luxury.

The brief

The Raniwala 1881 flagship store in Defence Colony, New Delhi, repositions Indian luxury through a spatial narrative rooted in lineage, craft, and cultural memory. Moving beyond the inherited language of global luxury, the project draws from Rajasthan’s rich artisanal traditions to create an immersive retail experience that presents heritage not as nostalgia, but as a living, evolving expression of contemporary design. Conceived as a modern interpretation of a traditional haveli, the store transforms the act of jewellery retail into a slower, more intimate encounter.

The planning departs from conventional retail formats, replacing linear circulation and transactional counters with a layered, experiential layout. At its heart lies an octagonal aangan, inspired by the geometry of Rajasthani homes and stepwells. Anchored by a carved marble fountain and a hand-inlaid floral floor in lapis-toned stone, this central volume organises movement while establishing a calm, contemplative core. Arched passages radiate outward, leading into a sequence of interconnected rooms that unfold gradually, encouraging pause, conversation, and discovery.

Drawing from the Raniwala family’s ancestral haveli in Beawar, the design distils key architectural elements such as mehraabs, courtyard proportions, and ornamental rhythms into a contemporary framework. Rather than replicating history, these elements are reinterpreted through materiality and scale, creating a space that feels both rooted and current. The absence of rigid display systems allows jewellery to be experienced in a setting closer to hospitality than to retail, where each room offers a distinct yet cohesive narrative.

The façade translates this language into a striking urban presence. A custom jaali, crafted in brushed gold and layered over backlit onyx, filters light into intricate patterns that shift through the day. By evening, the façade glows softly, transforming the store into a luminous landmark within its context. Inside, sheer drapery further diffuses light, creating an atmosphere that is both tactile and ephemeral. Bookmatched marble flooring establishes a sense of continuity and movement, while leather-clad displays and handcrafted silver furniture introduce warmth and tactility. Ceilings finished with hand-applied gold leaf lend a subtle luminosity, complemented by Tikri mirror inlay that reflects and refracts light in delicate patterns. Raw silk wall finishes soften the richness of the palette, allowing the jewellery to remain the focal point within a carefully composed backdrop.

Layered within this architectural framework are curated installations that bring the brand’s legacy to life. A leather-crafted ‘Legacy Wall’ traces the Raniwala family’s history through archival imagery and heirloom pieces, while bespoke displays, including a gold-plated ceremonial chariot, anchor the narrative in tangible artefacts.

By merging the spatial essence of a haveli with a contemporary sensibility, the project dissolves transactional boundaries and invites visitors into an environment of quiet immersion. It asserts a confident alternative to global luxury norms, where authenticity is drawn from cultural depth, and design becomes a medium for carrying heritage forward into the present.
