An academy in constant evolution, where learning adapts to possibility

The brief

The design prioritises maximising views around the building while ensuring optimal lighting conditions to support productive and engaging work environments. The facility comprises eight training rooms, with a total classroom capacity of 220 and a training occupancy of 155, facilitating diverse learning formats and collaboration across diverse educational and professional development activities.

Each Technical Centre is conceived as a multifunctional space, supporting hairstyling sessions, workshops, and large-scale events. The Learning Labs consist of individual training rooms, each dedicated to a different hair product brand. Sliding and folding partitions allow these rooms to merge into a single expansive hall that extends into the reception and cafeteria areas, accommodating larger gatherings and events. Balancing spatial efficiency and openness, the academy transforms into a dynamic professional learning environment that can easily adapt to larger presentations, ramp walks, and creative events.

The training rooms are furnished with lightweight, foldable tables and chairs on casters, enabling effortless reconfiguration. This flexible furniture system allows for rapid layout changes to suit varying group sizes, training formats, and collaborative activities. While the academy offers comprehensive audio-visual support, acoustic materials are integrated throughout the space to ensure effective sound management and an enhanced learning experience.

Themes of optimal daylight use define L’Oréal’s academic block, with every Technical Center immersed in natural light. A muted palette of whites and greys amplifies the quality of daylight, creating ideal visual conditions crucial for colour evaluation, accuracy and detailed stylist training. A pantry is also incorporated to encourage informal conversations and restorative breaks between sessions.

Locally sourced, sustainable materials are used in construction and furnishing to reduce environmental impact while highlighting the local aesthetic. The project also explores the reuse of existing HVAC equipment and on-site materials to minimise waste and control costs, reinforcing the project’s commitment to responsible resource management.

Beyond its immediate functionality, the spatial configuration, furniture systems, and programming of the academy respond to the evolving needs of professional training and creative expression. Through its responsive design framework, the project enhances functional performance and nurtures human experience. The result is a dynamic learning environment that not only serves its current purpose but is equipped to evolve alongside the needs of its users.
